5 Sonoma Valley Wineries You've Probably Never Heard Of (But Absolutely Should Visit)
Everyone knows the big names. You'll find them on every wine country itinerary, every tourism brochure, every "top 10" roundup from outlets that have never actually spent a Tuesday afternoon in Kenwood. And look — those wineries are famous for a reason.
But Sonoma Valley has always been better known among people in the know for what's tucked away. The appointment-only producers. The families who started making wine in their garage and never stopped. The winemakers who pour your tasting themselves and actually want to talk about what's in your glass.
These are five of our favorites — the ones we bring guests to when they tell us they want something real.
1. Toje Wines
Petaluma Gap | By invitation
The name is pronounced "TOI-yuh" — a Mosel Valley dialect word for rootstock — and that tells you everything about where this wine comes from. Toje was founded by Johannes, a German winemaker who came to Sonoma in 2009 for a three-month stint and never really left, and his wife Jenny, who grew up on the California coast. Together they make limited-production Pinot Noir, Sauv Blanc, Reisling, and Chardonnay from the Petaluma Gap with a focus on minimal intervention and native yeast — letting the coastal terroir speak rather than getting in the way of it. It's the kind of story that sounds made up, and the wines taste like it's true. https://tojewines.com/
2. Bordes Wines
Sonoma Valley | By appointment
Tucked at the end of Champlin Creek Road, Bordes is about as off-the-grid as wine country gets. What started as a family making wine in their Sausalito home — quite literally with zero winemaking knowledge and two half-ton bins of estate Pinot Noir — has grown into one of the most genuinely intimate tasting experiences in the valley. You're not visiting a tasting room. You're stepping into someone's story. Family members pour the wines, the vineyard surrounds you, and the whole thing feels nothing like what you'd expect from a wine tasting in Sonoma. Production is under 500 cases. When it's gone, it's gone. https://www.bordeswines.com/
3. Hamilton Family Wines
Kenwood | Open Wed–Sun
Greg and Lindsay Hamilton moved to Sonoma wine country with a dream, lost their home and much of their young vineyard in the 2017 wildfires, and opened their tasting room anyway in 2021. That resilience shows up in the wines — small-production, organically farmed, minimal-intervention Grenache, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cab-based blends that are deeply honest about where they come from. The tasting room itself, just off Highway 12 in Kenwood, has olive trees, cabanas, and what they call Golden Hour — a casual late-afternoon glass in the vineyard that is exactly as good as it sounds. No pretension. Just great wine and people who genuinely love the place. https://hamilton.wine/
4. Schermeister Winery
Glen Ellen | Walk-ins welcome
If you find yourself at Jack London Village — which, if you're visiting Songbird Parlour or The Mill, you already are — do not leave without stopping at Schermeister. Rob and Laura Schermeister have been making wine together since 2012: Rob as winemaker, Laura as the designer behind everything visual, from the tasting room to the labels. The wines are native fermented, unfiltered, unfined, and seriously bold — their guests use words like "hedonistic" and "intense." Every tasting is hosted by Rob or Laura themselves. The space is creekside, Scandinavian-inspired, and unlike anything else in the valley. Come for the Pinot Noir. Stay because you can't leave. https://schermeister.com/
5. Little Vineyards Family Winery
Glen Ellen | Open Fri–Sun, walk-ins welcome
Down a quiet country road just off Highway 12, Little Vineyards has been quietly producing award-winning estate reds since 2002 — Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and their beloved Band Blend, named for the music studio on property. Because yes, the family makes wine and music, and somehow both are excellent. The tasting room is relaxed and dog-friendly, with an outdoor patio overlooking the vineyards. Bring a picnic if you'd like — they welcome it. It's the kind of place where you show up planning to stay an hour and realize two hours later you're still talking to whoever poured your first glass. https://www.littlevineyards.com/
The Thing These Five Have in Common
None of them are trying to be everything to everyone. They're small, specific, and made by people who care deeply about what ends up in the bottle. That's what makes Sonoma Valley worth exploring beyond the obvious — and it's exactly why we love taking guests to places like these.
West Wine Tours operates out Glen Ellen, in the heart of Sonoma Valley. We'd love to build you a day around any of the wineries above — just get in touch and we'll take it from there!
